Why the Service Centers are Libraries for Librarians:
The Middletown and Willimantic Library Service Centers gather together library professional materials for use by Connecticut
librarians. Having these materials at the Service Centers helps libraries avoid having to purchase this expensive material
and gives Service Center staff the resources to assist librarians with their library-related questions.
Some common topics researched include: sample policies, summer reading programs, automating libraries, self-help for computer
programs, Internet searching, technology planning, readers' advisory, library director searches, library friends and trustee
information, cataloging and classification rules, public library administration, staff development, long-range planning, and
emergent literacy.
The Service Centers encourage Connecticut librarians to take advantage of all the professional resources the Division of Library
Development (DLD) makes available at the Centers and on WebJunction Connecticut.
What the Service Centers have:
1. Books on library and library-related topics (including A.L.A. publications and Neal-Schuman "how-to's").
2. Books on computers and automation.
3. Videos (MLSC only) on professional library and management topics.
4. Sample library policies, library job descriptions, and long-range plans (MLSC only) that supplement those available on WebJunction Best Practices for Connecticut.
5. Access to Library Literature Index.
6. Vertical file of Library Friends materials (MLSC only).
7. Summer reading program materials (WLSC only).
