Substance Abuse Among Older Adults
10:39 AM EDT 10/14/08 as a reply to Douglas Lord.
Substance Abuse Among Older Adults

Brown University’s five week Elderly Substance Abuse long distance learning course commences October 20, 2008.

See the Brown University Distance Learning Program Course Calendar web page.

The Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England and Brown University Distance Learning Program Brown University Distance Learning Program are offering a credited, on-line course on substance abuse among older adults.

When we think of alcohol or other drug abuse we usually think of adolescents and young adults, but awareness is growing that the elderly also suffer from abuse of alcohol and other drugs. A significant percentage of the population aged sixty-five and older suffers from a problem involving alcohol or other drug abuse. Such older substance abusers place even greater burdens on the health care system than do younger abusers, yet less attention is focused on their needs. This course will introduce the student to what is known about these problems in older adults. Topics to be addressed will include the epidemiology of substance abuse in the elderly, early onset versus late onset problems, issues in screening and assessment, treatment issues and approaches and barriers to treating the older substance abuser.

This course begins on October 20, 2008, and will run for 5 weeks. The required time commitment is two hours per week (10 contact hours). There are no real time events associated with this course. All course material will be posted on the Internet.

The total cost of this course is $60.00 (US) the course payment is due by October 20, 2008. Attracting Baby Boomers to Volunteer Service: A Transforming Life after 50
2:37 PM EST 12/23/08 as a reply to Douglas Lord.
Way cool webcast/webinar with Carla Lehn of the California State Library available here.

The presentation discusses best practices in recruiting baby boomer volunteers. Learn to re-engineer volunteerism to align with the desire and potential of boomers.

Lehn discusses the characteristics of boomers, differentiated from seniors and the frail elderly, and teaches how to create meaningful volunteer jobs that will attract boomers and keep them active and involved.

Remember:
• Boomers represent as much as 30 percent of YOUR community’s population
• Boomers are generally interested in putting their career experience and skills to work in a way that will benefit the community.
• Boomers are ready to be engaged and want purposeful work.

The California State Library's initiative - Transforming Life After 50: Libraries and Baby Boomers identified many ways in which libraries can better serve and engage Boomers. Leading the list is utilizing the talent and experience of Boomers in volunteer roles that support libraries and build community.
